An assessment of electric scooters after running one (Amo electric scooter, Model - Jaunty) for 1100 KMs in approx. 3 months
Specifications:
Battery pack – 6 units of 12V, 27 Ah battery (together make 72 V, 27 Ah) [selected VRLA taking into account a) wider availability b) ease of replacement when needed c) mature battery technology d) no report of vehicle fire due to VRLA opposed to Li battery(1) ]
Single charge – 100 KM+
Motor specification – Low speed rating though one would not feel if one is comfortable in traveling below 50 KM/hr
Disk break
No license required
Detailed info about this model (jaunty) can be found at Amo electric website
It can be seen that the average KM travelled over multiple charges in approx. 98 KM even though the company claims that the vehicle will be give 100 KM+. It can be easily observed that the average may reduce over time yet the vehicle offers much better KM/ charge compared to other vehicles in the market (as on Jan 2022).
The battery charge indicator is a 10 bar system and two bars simultaneously disappear when discharging happens. It has been observed that at 62 KMs 10 bars -> 8 bars transition happens and at 92 KMs 8 bars -> 6 bars transition happens.
In order to get the most of the vehicle following practices were adopted:
1. It is better to drive in short distances and give break to the vehicle if one wants to increase single charge distance travel.
2. Keep MCB off if leaving the vehicle for overnight to reduce battery consumption.
3. Use as one would use a normal scooty or motorcycle i.e. do not unnecessarily accelerate.
4. It is better to not overcharge. Even though the sellers say that there is automatic autocut it is better to use a smart switch to ascertain that the battery charges for pre defined hrs.
5. Regularly clean the scooty using a wet cloth.
6. Use 10 mm T-spanner (specific to this scooty) for opening up as it significantly reduces time of maintenance
Logistics
It was bought at Bareilly and then transported more than 600 KMs through train after serveral enquires from transporters e.g. trucks, train etc. Indian railways is very good in this aspect and minimal documentation will be required. It is also not required to take out the battery pack.
